NightFighter X: The Royal Marines' new counter-UAV system

The new portable counter-UAV system delivers defence against a wide range of drones and other unmanned vehicles.

Air defence troops from 30 Commando Royal Marines have been showing off their new counter UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) system – the NightFighter X –  during training in the deserts of California.

Royal Marines deployed with the Littoral Response Group (South) for training in the deserts and even defeated their US Marine Corps (USMC) counterparts in a peer-on-peer scenario.

According to manufacturer SteelRock Technologies, the NightFighter X is "a fully integrated portable counter-UAV system that delivers highly effective threat-neutralising performance against a wide range of drones and other unmanned vehicles".

It says the NightFighter X uses advanced 'hybrid effector' technology to neutralise drones.

The 'class-leading' system, SteelRock Technologies said, is optimised for single or dual user operation and has a range in excess of 2.5km.

The new counter-UAV system has been designed to be customised to meet a wide range of military, civilian and security applications.

The highly portable 'one-piece' solution has built-in electronics and 'hot swap' battery technology, said to be 'ideal' for covert deployment.
